The supplement aisle — whether physical or digital — is designed to overwhelm you. Bold claims. Clinical-sounding language. Impressive ingredient counts. But behind the marketing, the label on the back of the bottle tells the real story. The challenge is knowing how to read it.

This guide walks through exactly what to look for, what to question, and what to avoid when evaluating a food supplement in the UK.

Understanding UK Supplement Regulations

In the United Kingdom, food supplements are regulated as foods, not medicines. This distinction is important. It means supplements are governed by the Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003, the Food Safety Act 1990, and Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims (retained in UK law post-Brexit). The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) oversees the boundary between food supplements and medicines — if a product makes a medicinal claim (that it can treat, cure, or prevent disease), it legally requires a medicines licence.

What this means practically is that a reputable supplement will never say it "treats arthritis" or "cures fatigue." Instead, it will use authorised health claims drawn from the EU/UK Register — carefully worded statements that have been scientifically evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and approved for use.

When you see a claim like "Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system," that is not marketing copy. It is a legally authorised claim, word for word, that the brand is permitted to use because their product delivers vitamin C at or above the level specified in the register. If a brand is making health claims that do not appear in the EFSA register, that is a regulatory red flag.

The Ingredient List: Where Truth Lives

The ingredient list is required by law to list all ingredients in descending order of weight. This is your first clue about a product's real composition.

If a product called "Super Turmeric Complex" lists rice flour as its first ingredient, the majority of each capsule is filler — not turmeric. The active ingredient you are paying for may constitute a small fraction of the total capsule content.

Look for products where the active ingredients appear first in the list. Excipients (capsule shells, flow agents, bulking agents) should appear towards the end. Some common excipients include microcrystalline cellulose (a plant-derived bulking agent), magnesium stearate (a flow agent used during manufacturing), and silicon dioxide (an anti-caking agent). These are standard in capsule manufacturing and are generally recognised as safe at the levels used — but they should not be the primary contents of the capsule.

Proprietary Blends: What Are They Hiding?

A proprietary blend is a list of ingredients grouped under a single combined weight. For example, a label might say "Cognitive Blend 500 mg: Bacopa monnieri, Ginkgo biloba, Rhodiola rosea, Phosphatidylserine." The total weight is declared (500 mg), but the amount of each individual ingredient is not.

This is legal in the UK. It is also, in many cases, a deliberate strategy to conceal underdosing.

If a four-ingredient cognitive blend totals 500 mg, the mathematical maximum for any single ingredient is 500 mg — but the minimum could be as little as a fraction of a milligram. Without knowing the breakdown, you have no way of determining whether any ingredient is present at a dose that is likely to be meaningful.

Brands that use proprietary blends often argue they are protecting a unique formula from competitors. In reality, ingredient lists are public knowledge the moment a product reaches the market. The only thing a proprietary blend protects is the brand's ability to use cheap, underdosed ingredients without the consumer knowing.

NRV Percentages: What They Mean and What They Don't

NRV stands for Nutrient Reference Value — the daily amount of a vitamin or mineral considered sufficient to meet the needs of the average healthy adult. You will see NRV percentages on supplement labels, expressed as a percentage of the recommended daily intake.

A few things to understand about NRV: it represents a general population recommendation, not a personalised dose. Individual requirements vary based on age, sex, activity level, health status, and dietary intake. An NRV of 100% does not mean you are meeting your optimal level — it means you are meeting the minimum deemed adequate for the general population.

You will sometimes see NRV percentages well above 100% — for example, a Vitamin B12 supplement at 1,000% NRV. This is not inherently concerning. B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning excess is excreted rather than stored. The relevant question is whether the dose exceeds the tolerable upper intake level, which is a separate and stricter threshold established by food safety authorities.

Conversely, minerals like iron and Vitamin A have well-established upper limits. Exceeding these limits over prolonged periods can cause adverse effects. Always check whether a supplement's dose falls within established safe ranges, particularly if you are taking multiple products that contain the same nutrient.

Bioavailability: The Form Matters More Than the Amount

Two supplements can contain the same amount of a nutrient in milligrams but deliver vastly different amounts to your bloodstream. This is because different chemical forms of the same nutrient are absorbed with different efficiencies.

Magnesium is the most cited example. Magnesium oxide is cheap and contains a high percentage of elemental magnesium by weight, but studies have demonstrated absorption rates as low as four percent. Magnesium glycinate, citrate, and taurate are more expensive but substantially better absorbed. If you take 400 mg of magnesium oxide and absorb four percent, you are getting 16 mg of usable magnesium. If you take 300 mg of magnesium glycinate and absorb thirty percent, you are getting 90 mg — more than five times as much from a lower total dose.

The same principle applies across many nutrients. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is more effective at raising blood vitamin D levels than Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Methylfolate is the active form of folate that bypasses the MTHFR enzyme conversion required by folic acid. Chelated minerals (bound to amino acids) generally demonstrate superior absorption to inorganic mineral salts.

When evaluating a supplement, look beyond the headline milligram figure and check which form of each ingredient is used. A well-formulated product will specify the exact form and, ideally, explain why it was chosen.

Allergen Declarations: A Legal Requirement, Not Optional

UK food law requires that the fourteen major allergens are declared on product labels if they are present as ingredients or if the product is manufactured in a facility where cross-contamination is possible. These allergens include milk, eggs, soy, gluten, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, peanuts, tree nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide, and lupin.

Some supplements contain allergens that may not be immediately obvious. Whey protein contains milk. Phosphatidylserine is often derived from soy. Marine collagen contains fish. Glucosamine may be derived from shellfish (though plant-based alternatives exist).

Always read the allergen declaration, even if a product's name does not suggest it would contain a particular allergen. A "brain health" capsule containing soy-derived phosphatidylserine should clearly declare the soy allergen — if it does not, that is a significant compliance failure.

Red Flags to Watch For

There are several signs that a supplement may not be what it appears. Products that make disease-specific claims (such as "prevents cancer" or "treats depression") are either unlicensed medicines or non-compliant food supplements. Products with proprietary blends are concealing ingredient doses. Products that cite "studies" without providing references or that reference in-house, non-peer-reviewed research should be treated with caution. Products manufactured outside the UK or EU that do not demonstrate compliance with UK food supplement regulations may not meet the same safety and labelling standards.

The most reliable indicators of quality are straightforward: full ingredient transparency, declared doses for every active ingredient, GMP-certified manufacturing, independent third-party testing, and health claims drawn from the EFSA register.
